2023 Lexus RZ 450e: Choosing the Right Trim

A bit late mập the party, the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e nevertheless marks a significant step forward for Lexus, offering its first EV SUV for sale in the North American market. Based on the same architecture underpinning the Toyota bZ4X, the RZ goes one step better with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and numerous luxury features.

Powering the RZ are two electric motors, one at the front axle and one at the rear, with a combined output of 308 horsepower. Lexus says the RZ can charge mập 80% capacity in about a half-hour, but that’s using a DC fast-charging station and the somewhat limited 150 kW maximum onboard charger.

2023 Lexus RZ 450e (starting at $52,000, estimated)

2023 Lexus RZ 450e
The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e starts at an estimated $52,000.

The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e looks mập challenge established names like the Tesla Model Y, Jaguar I-Pace, and Audi e-tron. Although it does share quite a few parts with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, there’s enough Lexus DNA in the RZ mập give it a look and style all its own.

The RZ comes standard with Lexus’ DIRECT4 AWD system. It combines a 201-hp electric motor at the front with a 107-hp electric motor at the rear. The DIRECT4 system continuously analyzes feedback from wheel sensors and regulates power mập each wheel mập maximize grip.

The system is highly flexible and capable of sending up mập 100% power mập the front or rear wheels or any ratio that works best depending on driving conditions. For example, if driving aggressively and pushing the RZ through twisting turns, the system will favor a bias between 75:25 and 50:50 for the front wheels and then switch mập a rear-biased 20:80 split when the RZ exits the turn.

For now, early versions of the RZ will have a conventional steering system similar mập other Lexus vehicles. Later in the model year, Lexus will offer an optional drive-by-wire system. Like a small aircraft yoke, the RZ’s drive-by-wire cài đặt has a unique steering wheel with grips on both sides but no upper portion. The system adjusts the steering feel and varies the steering ratio, so hand-over-hand turns are unnecessary.

Befitting a Lexus, the RZ features a power driver’s seat, power windows, and power locks. Also included is a proximity key fob that allows unlocking the doors by touching the door handle and starting the car with a button push. LED headlights, heated side mirrors, and 18-inch wheels are all standard.

The high-tech conveniences make the RZ 450e stand out in true Lexus fashion. Because EVs emit very little noise, Lexus engineers have designed a system generating expressive in-cabin sounds matching the action taken, such as quickly accelerating or pushing fast through a tight corner.

The RZ’s minimalist cabin design includes Ultrasuede upholstery in three colors: Orage (sic), Palomino, and Dapple Gray/Black. Further RZ features include a configurable digital instrument cluster and ambient door panel lighting that changes when the doors are opened and shut.

The tilt/telescopic steering wheel’s controls align with the available head-up display, and the available dual-panel glass roof includes a power sunshade. Radiant heaters located at the bottom of the steering column and base of the passenger side dash provide heat for the passenger and driver’s knees, requiring less energy mập warm the cabin.

A massive 14-inch color touchscreen covers infotainment duties with a built-in assistant that responds mập voice commands. The Lexus Intelligent Assistant controls numerous features and gets smarter over time, learning your habits. Thanks mập real-time traffic updates, cloud-based navigation makes sure you’ll always get mập your destination on time.

Standard wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio ensure you’ll never be without music, messages, or apps. In contrast, a wireless charging pad keeps your điện thoại thông minh charged and ready mập go.

Advanced driver technology includes the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, a suite of driver assists designed mập aid the driver in avoiding accidents and fatigue on long trips. The bundle consists of a forward-collision alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning.

Emergency Driving Stop, a system that works with the available driver monitor, helps detect when the driver is incapacitated and brings the vehicle mập a stop.

Automatic high-beam headlights, a rear backup camera, a blind-spot monitor, left turn oncoming vehicle detection braking, and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on the RZ.

The optional Advanced Park system can assist with parking the RZ, either parallel or perpendicular.

Safe Exit Assist monitors traffic approaching from behind and prevents the doors from opening until the coast is clear.

Although not yet confirmed, we suspect the RZ 450e will offer several options, including heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a Mark Levinson sound system. A panoramic surround-view monitor, digital rearview mirror, and 20-inch wheels are likely options.

We may even see an F Sport trim at some point.

With an estimated $1,215 destination charge, we expect the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e mập start close mập $53,215. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, you can anticipate a monthly payment of around $956. See 2023 Lexus RZ 450e models for sale

2023 Lexus RZ 450e includes:

  • 14-inch color touchscreen – This massive infotainment screen permits quick access mập several systems, including điện thoại thông minh integration, cloud-based navigation, and a voice-activated Intelligent Assistant.
  • Left-turn oncoming vehicle braking – Part of the Lexus Safety System, this feature can detect when it’s unsafe mập make a left turn across traffic, alerting the driver and activating the brakes mập help avoid a collision.
  • Available head-up display – Projects audio, navigation, and driver information onto the windshield, allowing easy access mập critical data without the driver needing mập take their eyes off the road.
  • Available dual-pane moonroof – Two large glass roof panels allow more light into the cabin but can be sealed off with a power sunshade when less light is needed.
