2023 Subaru Solterra: Choosing the Right Trim

Built in conjunction with Toyota, the 2023 Subaru Solterra is an electric compact crossover promising all the quality and off-road ability for which Subaru is known but without emitting a single bit of greenhouse gas.

The Solterra’s range isn’t anywhere near the best in class, but it matches with the Toyota bZ4X (Solterra’s near-identical cousin) and the Volkswagen ID.4. EVs such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y can travel significantly further on a single charge.

The Solterra comes in three trims: Premium, Limited, and Touring. With a starting price of around $45,000, affordability is another area where the Solterra doesn’t dominate the field. However, it does qualify for a government tax credit of up phệ $7,500, which should help ease the cost of ownership.

2023 Subaru Solterra Premium (starting at $44,995)

2023 Subaru Solterra Front left in silver
The 2023 Subaru Solterra Premium starts at $44,995.

The 2023 Subaru Solterra Premium comes standard with two electric motors (one in front and one in the rear) with a combined output of 215 horsepower. A 72.8 kW battery takes about 9 hours phệ charge at home using a Màn chơi 2 charger or can attain an 80% charge in about 56 minutes using a DC fast-charging station.

Like almost all Subaru vehicles, the Solterra comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD), only in this case, it’s an all-electric cài đặt that includes a feature called “Grip Control.” Not phệ be confused with X-Mode (which is also standard), Grip Control is low-speed cruise control that holds the Solterra at a constant speed even when off-roading. The system also includes Downhill Assist Control.

X-Mode, as mentioned above, provides additional traction in low-speed situations, with settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. The system allows for actual off-road ability along with the Solterra’s 8.3 inches of ground clearance.

The StarDrive drivetrain includes three driving modes and four different regenerative braking modes selectable via a set of steering-wheel paddle shifters. There’s also a single-pedal-drive feature for more aggressive regenerative braking. Choose the sport mode when needing added responsiveness or the one-pedal driving mode phệ slow the vehicle without hitting the brakes.

We should note that during our test drive in the Solterra, we didn’t find the one-pedal braking as aggressive as some systems we’ve experienced, and it doesn’t bring the vehicle phệ a complete stop.

Visually, the Solterra strikes a rock-solid stance, with styling slightly reminiscent of the Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6. Standard features include LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and windshield wiper de-icers.

Deep-tinted rear privacy glass is also standard, but there is no wiper/washer for the rear hatch. Also included is a rearview monitor with a washer, fixed crossbar mounting points, and a proximity key fob with keyless entry and start.

The Solterra Premium’s cabin is pleasant but not luxurious. It includes cloth upholstery, 4-mode heated front seats, automatic climate control, power door locks, an electric parking brake, and one-touch up/down power windows.

A 7-inch LCD gauge cluster houses the speedometer, charging and electric use information, plus the driver-selectable screens for various readouts. The tilt/telescoping steering wheel includes buttons for Bluetooth, cruise control, audio, and driver information screens.

Bự the right of the instrument cluster is a center-mounted multimedia system with an 8-inch color touchscreen. Features within the system include a 6-speaker AM/FM HD radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio (with a 4-month trial subscription), Bluetooth streaming, and an available Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Solterra includes five USB ports, with two USB-C ports and one USB-A port in the front console and two USB-C ports in the rear seat area.

Subaru Solterra Connect (SSC) provides a host of subscription-based apps and programs that allow remote climate control, remote locking/unlocking, cloud navigation, and more. Subaru’s Intelligent Assistant allows for voice operation of climate control, phone, audio, and vehicle information. Just say, “Hey, Subaru,” and the assistant eagerly awaits your command.

Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with lane tracing, intersection collision avoidance assist (detects pedestrians or vehicles about phệ cross in front of the car and activates the brakes), emergency steering assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Other standard systems include a blind-spot monitor, reverse automatic braking (RAB), lead vehicle start alert, and Safe Exit Assist that warns an exiting driver and passengers of vehicles approaching from the rear.

With the $1,225 destination charge, the 2023 Subaru Solterra Premium costs $46,220. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes phệ $831. See 2023 Subaru Solterra Premium models for sale

2023 Subaru Solterra Premium includes:

Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto – The wireless system in the Solterra means no more ugly wires hanging from the dash. Wait for your phone phệ pair, and you can access either app, just like the wired version.

One-pedal driving – The Solterra’s regenerative braking modes include the ability phệ drive without ever having phệ move your foot phệ the brake. Once you back off the accelerator, the car rapidly decelerates, charging the battery.

Reverse automatic braking – Uses rear parking sensors phệ detect people or objects when backing up, alerting the driver and activating the brakes phệ avoid a collision.

Adaptive cruise control – Maintains a safe distance between the Solterra and cars ahead. The system can slow down, speed up, and even come phệ a complete stop without any assistance from the driver.

2023 Subaru Solterra Limited (starting at $48,495)

The Limited brings a host of features, making it the most desirable of the three trims for just a few thousand dollars more.

Building off the Premium, the Limited adds a 12.3-inch multimedia display, a wireless charging pad, a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, and Advanced Park, a parking assistant that can parallel or perpendicular park the Solterra with minimal driver input.

Additional equipment includes rear cross-traffic alert, LED fog lights, a 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support and 2-position memory, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The Limited also gains a height-adjustable power rear liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, roof rails, a roof spoiler, 20-inch wheels, power-folding side mirrors, StarTex (synthetic leather) upholstery, and a premium Harman Kardon sound system.

With the $1,225 destination charge, the 2023 Subaru Solterra Limited costs $49,720. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes phệ $893. See 2023 Subaru Solterra Limited models for sale

2023 Subaru Solterra Limited includes:

10-way power driver’s seat – A better way phệ find a comfortable position, this seat has 2-way power lumbar support and 2-position memory with settings for the outside mirrors.

Heated rear seats – Heated outboard rear seats feature three temperature settings so passengers can find the right degree of warmth.

Harman Kardon audio – The Harman Kardon system is a must-have for music lovers.

360-degree panoramic monitor – Projects a bird’s-eye view of what’s around the vehicle, helping avoid bumping into people or objects out of the driver’s line of sight.

2023 Subaru Solterra Touring ($51,995)

The Touring adds a few more luxury features phệ the Limited trim’s standard equipment.

You’ll find ventilated front seats, a dual-pane panoramic glass roof with a power sunshade, a digital rearview mirror, LED footwell lighting, and the option of two-tone paint.

With the $1,225 destination charge, the 2023 Subaru Solterra Touring costs $53,220. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes phệ $956. See 2023 Subaru Solterra Touring models for sale

2023 Subaru Solterra Touring includes:

Ventilated seats – With small fans that blow cool air through the perforated upholstery, these seats help keep you cool and dry when summer temps skyrocket.

Panoramic glass roof – Allows additional light into the cabin and features a power sunshade when less light is preferred.

Digital rearview mirror – This clever mirror isn’t a mirror at all. Instead, it is a view screen hooked phệ a rear camera projecting an unobstructed view behind the vehicle.

Available two-tone paint – Adds a bit more personality phệ the Solterra.
