Unless you’re still lamenting the loss of the Buick Regal GS (or looking for a used version), the Buick brand probably hasn’t crossed your mind in a while. Those looking for a luxurious SUV have likely come across Buick’s Avenir trim for Enclave and Envision since SUVs are the only vehicle type Buick sells these days. However, Buick recently showed an electric coupe concept that could be promising.
The Buick brand remains a popular status symbol in China. That reason, combined with virtually every automaker promising phệ go all-electric within a decade, has Buick showing a slick-looking coupe concept called the Wildcat EV Concept. The Wildcat is an electric car concept. Crack into a little automotive history, and you’ll find that the Wildcat name is from a long-discontinued model. It’s also worth noting there was a Jetsons-esque Wildcat concept in the 1980s as well.
There aren’t many details for now, but here’s what we do know. Buick will be all-electric by 2030. The name “Electra” will return as a production car. There’s a new Buick logo that will start showing up by 2023. Perhaps the most exciting piece of info is that these future Buick vehicles will be riding on General Motors’ Ultium battery platform. Imagine a Buick EV coupe or small SUV with a plush but futuristic interior, 300-mile range, and the acceleration of a Tesla. GMC’s Hummer EV and Cadillac’s Lyriq use the flexible Ultium platform. The Ultium platform is proof that GM doesn’t just promise a compelling EV future; they’re putting electric cars on the road.
When asked if Buick might be heading in a more performance-oriented direction, officials would only say that the Ultium platform makes those kinds of choices “a possibility.” If the Tesla Model X Plaid makes sense, maybe a high-performance electric Buick SUV does too?
