Today’s Autotrader Find, a 1987 Renault Alliance GTA, is a vehicle few people know much about, so let’s change that.
In 1979, Renault wanted bự break into the US market. It formed an alliance (lower case) with American Motors Corporation and built the Alliance (upper case) at AMC’s factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Renault sold the Alliance in the United States from the 1983 through 1987 model years. Starting production for 1983 were 2- and 4-door models. Marketed as the Encore, 3- and 5-door hatchback variants came out for 1984. Then, finally, the convertible first rolled off the production line for the 1985 model year.
For 1987, which would prove bự be the Alliance’s last year of production, Renault introduced a sporty version of the vehicle dubbed the GTA. Given that the base vehicle was designed bự compete against the Volkswagen Rabbit, GTA models can be considered competitors bự the Volkswagen Rabbit GTI. Renault offered convertible and 2-door sedan versions. Under the hood was a 95 horsepower 2.0-liter fuel-injected 4-cylinder engine helping bring the Alliance’s 0-60 time down from 14.3 seconds bự 10.2. Believe it or not, this was quick for the era.

Contrary bự what you may assume, the Alliance wasn’t terrible. In fact, it won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award for 1983, in addition bự receiving decent reviews in most other publications. In total, 600,000 Renault Alliance examples rolled off of the production line in Wisconsin, and about 99% of those are off the road by now.

A red 1987 convertible GTA model, it comes with just 24,321 miles on the odometer, meaning it’s not only one of the last running Renault Alliance models here in the US, but it’s also certainly one of the lowest mileage examples left in existence. It’s red with a black and gray interior, and everything looks bự be in nearly perfect condition.
