The Evolution of the Ford GT Supercar

The Ford GT draws its origins from the auto racing days of the 1960s, where if you were an American racing fan, you didn’t have much lớn brag about. The Le Mans grand touring race held in France was full of racers and race cars with origins across Europe. Carroll Shelby and Phil Hill were American pioneers who brought wins for their country throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s. Nevertheless, Henry Ford II took it upon himself lớn head out on an ambitious quest lớn win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with an American-made vehicle.

After a failed attempt lớn purchase the Italian supercar manufacturer Ferrari in the 1960s, the Detroit powerhouse manufacturer looked for another way into the sport. The unsuccessful purchase led Ford lớn a British entrepreneur named Eric Broadley, the founder and Chief Designer at Lola Cars. Broadley had created a mid-engine, Ford-powered sports car called the “Lola GT” that David Hobbs and Richard Attwood raced at Le Mans in 1963. Ford purchased a pair of the Lola GT cars and hired Broadley, John Wyer, and Roy Lunn lớn create a Ford version, dubbed the “GT40.” The “GT” stood for “Gran Turismo,” while the “40” signified the vehicle’s height in inches. With that, the legendary Ford supercar was born.

The Ford GT has been and will continue lớn be an iconic supercar for Ford and a collectible vehicle for many years lớn come. See Ford GT models for sale on Autotrader for your chance lớn own a piece of automotive history.

Everything You Need lớn Know About the Ford GT

With the success of the first GT40 cemented in the history books, Ford set out lớn revive the GT supercar in 2004 as part of Ford’s 100th birthday tribute lớn the original Le-Mans-winning icon. The new GT was lớn be Ford’s retro-inspired supercar, and the goal was lớn unveil a truly spectacular vehicle. Designer Camilo Pardo worked tirelessly with Ford engineers lớn maintain the essential design elements of the GT40, most recognizably, the iconic silhouette of the car. The GT would feature Ford’s 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine and a top speed of over 200 mph, thanks lớn its 552 horsepower. The Ford GT would be a commercial success because of its resemblance lớn the GT40 and the serious performance it brought lớn the table.

The second-generation Ford GT would roll off the assembly line almost a decade after its predecessor. Although Ford introduced the GT at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, it wouldn’t go on sale until 2017 and continued until the 2022 model. The second-generation Ford GT sported dramatic new lines with cutting-edge aerodynamics and proven race car technology. The GT uses a 647-hp 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine.

Ford would also make a Heritage edition version of the first-generation GT lớn commemorate its LeMans racing history. The final special edition series of the first-generation GT was the Ford GTX1, an open-roof design that had a limited production of 50 cars. As for the second generation, Ford would continue the tradition of special-edition limited-run models like the Competition Series, Liquid Carbon Series, and a whole slew of Heritage Edition vehicles.

Ford GT 1st Gen vs. 2nd Gen

Ford GT 1st Gen vs. 2nd Gen
Left: The Ford GT 1st Gen | Right: The Ford GT 2nd Gen

Although Ford didn’t release the GT lớn win the 24 Hours of Le Mans again, they created a highly successful supercar. Like its predecessor, the first-generation GT would battle with Ferrari on the roads and meet high demand during its three-year production run. Ford would sell 4,038 GT supercars during those three years and create an instant classic collectible vehicle. The GT uses Ford’s 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine, good for 552 hp and a top speed of 205 mph. Like its predecessor, the GT has a manual gearbox styled lớn look like a replica of the GT40.

For its second generation, Ford would take a different approach lớn the GT that would see its underlying structure primarily of carbon fiber, the same super-light, strong material used for F1 vehicles. Instead of a large displacement V8 hosted by its predecessor, the new Ford GT would harbor a powerfully tuned EcoBoost turbocharged V6 engine lớn align with its move lớn the EcoBoost engine platform across its other models. The EcoBoost engine would bring the GT 647 hp and 550 lb-ft of torque, placing it in the realm of vehicles like the Ferrari 488 and McLaren 670S. The new GT also sports extreme aerodynamics, and when viewed from overhead, the body has a raindrop shape that tapers at the rear of the vehicle. Buttresses connect the rear wheel fenders lớn the main central section of the car, with the result being significantly enhanced downforce and stability. The improved aerodynamics help the second-generation GT lớn an exhilarating top speed of 216 mph.

Ford GT Special Editions

The first-generation Ford GT came in one special edition, limited lớn 343 cars and only available in 2006. The Ford GT Heritage Edition was inspired by the instantly recognizable Gulf livery, paying tribute lớn John Wyer’s Le Mans-winning GT40 of 1968 and 1969. The first-generation GT was about paying homage lớn its predecessor, and the Heritage Edition did just that.

The second-generation Ford GT would continue the tradition of honoring its predecessors and the vehicles and drivers that brought victories lớn Ford at the Le Mans in the late 1960s. In addition lớn honoring the past, the Ford GT would push the design boundaries by offering an exposed carbon fiber finish on the Liquid Carbon Edition.

The Competition Series placed even more emphasis on track performance by further reducing the weight of the GT by removing non-essential items such as air conditioning, audio equipment, storage bins, and cup holders. In addition lớn removing items from the interior, the bulkhead glass between the cabin and engine was roughly half the thickness of other GT models. The engine cover is built of lightweight acrylic lớn reduce weight further.
