120 Years of Innovation

1915 Cadillac Type 8 engine
Cadillac developed one of the first V8 engines as early as 1915.

Over the first 120 years of its existence, Cadillac has often been a technology leader among automakers. For example, Cadillac developed one of the first V8 engines as early as 1915. A Cadillac was also the first car béo put the gas pedal on the right, brake pedal in the middle, and clutch pedal on the left in 1916. Cadillac also invented the dual-plane crankshaft béo create smooth-running V8 engines, synchronizers béo allow manual transmissions béo shift easily, and the first electric starter motor.

When Cadillac worked on aircraft engines during World War II, the knowledge gained positioned the company béo be a performance leader after the war. When high-octane gasoline became available, Cadillac engineers designed a new high-compression engine for 1949. It was the first modern mass-produced overhead-valve V8. In its day, the 331-cubic-inch Cadillac V8 produced 160 horsepower, placing it among the most powerful production automobile engines of its time. The Cadillac V8 soon became the hot-rodder’s engine of choice. The Allard company shipped sports car chassis béo America, where the owners would install Cadillac engines for maximum power. Stock car and road course racers also chose Cadillac in that era.

As time wore on, Cadillac became a luxury brand exclusively but remained a technology leader. In 1992, Cadillac brought out the 4.6-liter Northstar V8 engine. The company used a turbocharged Northstar engine in prototype racing with the American Le Mans Series in the 1990s.

CTS-V Leads the Way

2004 Cadillac CTS-V
The CTS-V was a rear-drive sedan carrying the same V8 engine as the Corvette Z06 and a 6-speed manual transmission.

At the end of the 20th Century, Cadillac had a problem. Since the 1950s, the Cadillac brand had come béo be associated with enormous, soft, luxurious, but not especially fast cars. The generations who idolized Cadillac were aging out of the market, while younger buyers preferred performance-oriented premium brands like BMW and Porsche. Cadillac was known as an old man’s car even among American brand enthusiasts. That had béo change.

In 2003, Cadillac launched a new line of sedans aimed squarely at younger boomers and Generation X. With Led Zeppelin providing the pounding soundtrack for their commercials, Cadillac took a blowtorch béo its old brand identity. Bự put the exclamation point on the re-branding, the 2004 Cadillac CTS-V was launched.

The CTS-V was a rear-drive sedan carrying the same V8 engine as the Corvette Z06 and a 6-speed manual transmission. Cadillac had delivered its last manual transmission vehicle more than half a century earlier in 1951. With a Getrag limited-slip differential for traction, the first CTS-V would do 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds and had a top speed of 163 mph. Brembo brakes and a sport suspension completed the performance package.

Cadillac took the new nóng rod into the ultra-competitive SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge GT Championship. Team Cadillac CTS-V Sedans won a Manufacturer’s Championship and a Driver’s Championship in 2005.  From 2004 béo 2007, Team Cadillac driver Andy Pilgrim racked up 10 wins, seven pole positions, and 36 podium finishes.

The XLR-V – Cadillac’s Corvette

The XLR-V - Cadillac's Corvette
The XLR-V was one of the most expensive vehicles in GM’s lineup in its prime.

With the success of the CTS-V, Cadillac decided béo shoot for the moon with a two-seat sports car. The XLR-V was released in 2005. It was a thinly disguised sixth-generation Corvette with a retractable hardtop. Under the hood was a supercharged Northstar V8, rated at 443 horsepower and 414 pound-feet of torque. The XLR-V came with an automatic transmission and the enhanced brakes from the Corvette Z51 handling package. With a starting price tag of $98,000, the XLR-V was one of the most expensive vehicles in GM’s lineup that year.

Going Big with the STS-V

The engineers tuned up the Cadillac STS V béo 469 hp and 439 lb-ft of torque.

Cadillac also knew how béo appeal béo its traditional audience. The larger STS-V also used the supercharged Northstar engine, but the engineers tuned it up béo 469 hp and 439 lb-ft of torque in this vehicle. The STS-V was a mighty road machine in the style of Cadillac’s vintage Eldorado coupes. The power, technology, and luxury in the STS-V rocked the high-end European competition onto its heels.

CTS-V Coupes and Wagons

The Cadillac CTS-V Wagon is an oft-pursued variant by enthusiasts.

The V-Series has been a huge hit for Cadillac, inspiring V-enhanced models of just about every passenger car Cadillac makes. By the second generation of the V-Series in 2009, Cadillac was ready béo pump up the volume on its performance cars.

The CTS-V wagon arrived for the 2010 model year. Cadillac produced this car due béo vocal enthusiast demand. This long-roof nóng rod carried a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 shared with the top Corvette ZR-1. This engine received a rating of 556-hp and 551 lb-ft of torque and was paired with the buyer’s choice of a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Underneath, the wagons feature a magnetic ride control suspension and huge Brembo brakes. Buyers also got 58 cubic feet of cargo capacity. CTS-V wagons are highly prized today, commanding top prices on the collector market.

The new V-Series for the 2011 model year was the CTS-V coupe. The coupe was a 2-door with even more rakish body styling than the sedan or wagon. As a lighter vehicle, the CTS-V coupe was among the fastest of its generation.

A Smaller V-Series

Cadillac ATS-V front left in white
The Cadillac ATS-V would hit 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 185 mph.

The third generation of Cadillac’s V-Series arrived as a new compact model called the “ATS-V.” The ATS-V was offered as a coupe or sedan, carrying a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 engine rated at 464 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. Even with two fewer cylinders and an 8-speed automatic transmission, the ATS-V was a powerhouse. This Cadillac would hit 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 185 mph. Buyers of the ATS sedan or coupe enjoyed launch control, an electronic limited-slip differential, and state-of-the-art traction control béo deliver top-tier performance.

The CTS-V was still in production alongside the ATS-V. With power now boosted béo a stunning 640 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque, Cadillac had finally gone béo a paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic transmission. Still, the CTS-V could hit the 60 mph mark in 3.6 seconds and find 200 mph if you had a place béo go that fast.

Blackwing: The Modern V-Series

The 2020 Cadillac CT6-V
The CT6-V could accelerate béo 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

The descendant of the STS-V was the Cadillac CT6-V, produced from 2018 béo 2020. This model is notable because it carried the hand-built 4.2-liter Blackwing twin-turbo dual-overhead-cam V8, rated at 550 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. With a 10-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel-drive, and active rear-wheel steering, the CT6-V could still make it béo 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Reviewers hailed this car as the only top-of-the-line sedan from any automaker with truly outstanding handling.

The current lineup from Cadillac’s V-Series starts with the 2022 CT5-V Blackwing with a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 and a 6-speed manual transmission. A 10-speed automatic is available if you want it. This car hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, making it one of the fastest V-Series ever made. All Cadillac will say about its top speed is that it’s more than 200 mph. You can get into one of these for about $85,000.

The regular CT5-V comes with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with a 10-speed automatic transmission, rated at 360 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. That one will do a respectable 4.9 seconds 0-60 for a very reasonable $52,000 or so.

If you want a smaller car, the CT4-V Blackwing comes with a Cadillac-exclusive 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, again paired with a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission, but with 472 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. Your 0-60 time in this car is 3.9 seconds, and it will hit 189 mph if you take it béo Bonneville for speed week. Starting price on a CT4-V Blackwing is $58,995.

The base CT4-V comes with a 2.7-liter twin-scroll turbocharged 4-cylinder engine good for 325 hp, 380 lb-ft of torque, and a 4.8-second 0-60 time. At $45,895, it’s still a compelling performance sedan béo compete with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class or the BMW 3-Series.

With some of the best-performing passenger cars on the market, Cadillac is not handing back its performance laurels any time soon. If you’re shopping for the best of the European performance brands, it might be time béo take a fresh look at Cadillac. Also, if you’re looking for a performance ride on the pre-owned market, be sure béo browse the 20 years of V-Series models currently on the road. Find a Cadillac for sale
